Ang Eng, was founded by Madam Lim Wah Choon (1924-1998) in 1955. Her Nyonya Kebaya business originally operated from a very old straits pre-war shop house above a dried seafood merchant shop in Pekan Cina, Alor Setar. Her passionate work together with fine workmanship attracted clientele not only from Malaysia but even from Singapore.
The Nyonya Kebaya family business grew and in the 80s was shifted to the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur. In year 1982, Madam Lim was invited by the Singapore Peranakan Society to demonstrate the making of the Nyonya Kebaya at the Singapore National Museum organized. In the year 2003, Ang Eng was invited to be one of the Malaysian Fashion Designers. The showcase of a collection of Nyonya Kebaya received overwhelming responses.
Today, Ang Eng’s Nyonya Kebaya is not only in keeping with the traditional kebaya making, but also maintains the originality of every piece made.
Every piece of our hand made Nyonya Kebaya tells a story
Since 1955, Ang Eng has been at the forefront in bringing back the legacy of Straits Chinese kebaya and blend into today’s fashion lifestyle. It has created its own unique style with influences from the Baba and Nyonya. Nyonya’s is a name used for the culture of the early Chinese immigrants in Southeast Asia, they later increased with the British straights settlements after intermarriages with the Malay population. The Nyonya kebaya first appeared in Baba Nyonya culture only at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Nyonya kebaya has generally been around for over a century, however, its traditional, cultural value and historical claim is never changing. It is a promise that the more lavish the kebaya the more prolific the story for tales are embroidered upon the material.
